Austin Jaycee Preservation ProjectRecently several Austin Jaycee Roosters met in the basement of the John Henry Faulk Library in Austin to go through several hundred project books in order to record and preserve them in special storage boxes. The project was led by JCI Senator, former Austin Jaycee President and former Mayor of Austin Lee Cooke in coordination with Austin History Center Curator/Archivist Mike Miller.

Fellow JCI Senators Richard Battle and Mike McNamara, past Austin Jaycee presidents Jerry Tucker and Tom Bergstrom, and past Austin Jaycee Treasurer Brad Duggan pitched in to take apart the project and program books, some going back 75 years, then place the contents in special folders, labeling and placing the folders in the archival boxes.

There were over 70 boxes of Jaycee books and after the project is completed the contents of each box will include a list of every folder and project title with the year of the project. These lists will be entered into the archive records so that anyone seeking information can readily seek out the original folder in these boxes.

The hours spent that day were rich in storytelling and comparisons of the way it was back then and amazement at just what Jaycees were accomplishing, raising thousands of dollars for Muscular Dystrophy or providing food and gifts for families at Christmas. And, each book’s cover page lists the population of Austin and number of Jaycees at that time. It is a treasure trove of history for a rapidly growing area in central Texas. This is a project that every local Jaycee chapter, whether active today or long past, should undertake to preserve their legacy and rich history!

The Texas Jaycee Foundation has dual goals:

  • Providing scholarships to students attending schools in Texas
  • Preserving and enhancing the Texas Jaycee Legacy
